Password Security
Why are passwords added to a PDF?
Passwords are added to PDFs for multiple reasons. One of those reason is security, an author can create a PDF and put a password of their choosing on the PDF to prevent numerous actions such as Opening the PDF, Editing or even printing and much more.
To add password protection to your PDF:
- Open Nitro Pro.
- Click on the Protect Tab > Password Security.
- You will see multiple options here including putting a Open password this puts a password on the document that must be entered each time you open the PDF, you will also see a Permissions password. This allows you to set a password that must be entered to gain access to features such as editing and/or printing.
- Once you have selected your Password and/or desired options you can click on Finish to set the password restrictions.
Notes:
What happens if you forget the password?
If you forget your Password that you set on a PDF file there is no way of recovering it. So make sure you write it down and keep it in a safe place.
When I open a PDF certain features are greyed out, what does this mean?
When you open a PDF that has had security implemented on it, the author could have set some restrictions such as editing or printing. If you see a greyed out area or options that are not useable then this is what has happened.
