Enhanced digital signature validation in Nitro PDF Pro for Windows

Starting with the release of Nitro PDF Pro for Windows v14.32.0.15 and above, Nitro has enhanced our digital signature validation process.

  • Nitro has introduced revocation status checks: we now verify the revocation and status of certificates used for digital signature validation
  • We have implemented root certificate updates, enabling automatic updating of root certificates to ensure validity and trustworthiness
  • We have also expanded certificate support: We've enhanced compatibility with various certificate authorities and formats
  • Improved QES validation

Nitro can now validate documents signed with CAs (Certificate Authorities) from EU trusted lists (EUTL), and in-particular, Nitro Sign Premium-signed documents.

The European Union Trusted List (EUTL) is a publicly accessible directory of over 200 accredited Trust Service Providers (TSPs). These providers meet the highest compliance standards under the EU's eIDAS regulation for electronic signatures. They offer services such as certificate-based digital IDs for individuals, digital seals for businesses, and time-stamping, which are used to create Qualified Electronic Signatures (QES) based on digital signature technology.

Under eIDAS, only Qualified Electronic Signatures are legally equivalent to handwritten signatures. Additionally, these signatures are automatically accepted in cross-border transactions within EU member states. While each EU country supervises its own TSPs, once a provider is accredited in one EU country, their services can be offered across all EU member states with the same level of compliance.

Once you obtain a digital ID from a trusted provider, you can securely sign documents and transactions, ensuring full compliance with EU regulations. This flexibility allows your organization to choose the provider that best fits your unique compliance needs.
